Pros
They work well as a billing company. They have a great work record and always get work done for us quickly. I was always happy with their follow through.

Cons
It is not the cheapest of all billing software. There are some that are cheaper that could maybe do the same service.

I still thought this was an excellent product but I wouldn't recommend to anyone with a small group of users.

Pros
The mobile piece was an excellent solution at the time but as standards changed, we no longer needed a system like this. There are a lot of bells and whistles but they come at a price.

Cons
It was pretty expensive for the population we were using this for. Maybe 200 people were using it and it was a huge cost. Used this software for a year or so but no longer needed the mobile portion so the software became too expensive.

Pros
Love the level of support and the consistent improvements that develop without additional cost. The product has evolved dramatically in the past 6.5 years I have used it and accounts for 2-3 employees (that don't get sick).

Cons
This company continues to grow leaps and bounds every year and as such support is currently going through some growing pains. I have inquired about this and it is something that is on the top of the tune up list. Its not cheap... but you do get what you pay for.

Popular system used by a lot of practices, so integrates really nicely with a lot of systems and has had plenty of use to get all the bugs worked out.

Pros
AthenaHealth's EMR looks great and has all of the functionality one would want. There is a big focus on billing and the billing algorithms are continuously updated to make sure practices bill and get reimbursed as efficiently as possible. Integrates with Chiron for easy telemedicine accessibility.

Cons
I found it hard to determine pricing. There is a cost component per amount billed, but after three conversations, I still didn't have a cost estimate or understand the structure, so moved on.

We rue the day we decided to go with Athena as our EMR/ Practice management system.

We have been with Athena since June 2015. It was a huge learning curve and very little of their system is easy to self teach. They have not made this system intuitive. Their support during our conversion was very poor. We had several "superusers" for about 5 days. These folks were very nice but had no clue how to help beyond the very basics. They were constantly calling the help center themselves. Now that I have been using this system for a year and a half, I find it workable, but not efficient. It takes far too many clicks to navigate the chart. I spend huge amounts of time on the chart to get to the sign off. There is no easy fast method to simply document a phone call in the chart....takes many clicks just to enter a quick note. We had planned to cut our billing department staff significantly since Athena offers billing services. Not only did we not cut billing staff positions, we had to add more! One would thing they would have features like being able to easily track whether payors are paying the contracted rate when we get paid for a service. Not the case at all. To do this, apparently we would have to hand enter every code and $ for every payor. These rates change constantly, so this is not a easy task to accomplish. Finally, getting help on their help line takes way too long. The SHORTEST time I have waited is 5 minutes, which is reasonable, but most of the time, I have waited much longer. About 30% of the time, the wait is so long, I just give up.....after sitting on hold for over 20 min. We pay a significant % of our entire practice income for the privilege of this weak poorly designed, poorly run EMR/PM system. If you're thinking about getting Athena, DON'T DO IT!

Pros
Web based, access from any computer that has internet access.

Cons
see above, expensive, poor support, clunky, not intuitive, no value added, not a good partner

Pros
The EHR was easy to use. The best part is Athena's back office support. They handle all aspects of insurance filing reducing the need for additional staff just to handle billing and filling functions. Their pricing is based on % received which cover the EHR and back office services.

Cons
The % was a little concerning, although when the cost of additional staffing is included in the analysis, not so bad.

This is a great company with amazingly smart people working with us everyday to make our lives easier at work. I cannot imagine choosing any other company, and I did a ton of research and due diligence. Athena is a company which sees the future and takes us there with them. We all love the products and the company. You will too!

Pros
The beauty of athenaClinicals is that there is only one version of athenaClinicals, and that is the updated version. They update for us and it is constantly being updated. The great thing about athena is that you don't "buy" it, you are basically a subscriber and they do all the updates, all the back office work for you. The implementation process went beautifully, we worked really hard to get it right at the start so we (purposefully) overtrained ourselves. We have never looked back. athenaClinicals is easy to use, quite intuitive and very flexible. Many different physicians can use the system in their own way. The customer support is wonderful-the people who answer are calls are knowledgeable and follow up. We work with athena as as partners. We are doing very well financially and have enhanced our bottom line through efficiencies and through charge capture. We are not coding higher. We know that because athena has amazing report writing and data mining capabilities.

Cons
Athena is a monthly expense and not cheap, but we feel we get more than our money's worth . Financially we are doing very well as a matter of fact, we have never done better

Good for use in urgent care especially if you are using for several

Used daily for 2+ years

Review Source: Capterra

Again, reporting is very accurate. It was not originally made for urgent care so there are a few work arounds like work flows for instance.

Pros
Prior to this we had Docutap which had a more user-friendly interface. However, when we would run a report and then the same one 5 minutes later using the same parameters they would never balance out. With athena we can run reports for one site or all 17 sites or any combination. It's also easy to get used to the user-interface, just takes a little practice.

Cons
athena's products don't come cheap and if you need customer support you need to put in a ticket which is a pain. To do a customization of a requirement takes quite a bit of time and effort.

Looking out for THEIR bottom line

Used daily for less than 6 months

Review Source: Software Advice

I would NEVER recommend Athena products. Other providers cautioned me against choosing such a large company to partner for EMR/Billing because larger companies are not as concerned with each customer as smaller companies. We found this to be 100% true. Athena was only concerned with THEIR BOTTOM LINE AND THEIR LOST COSTS. The sales rep even had the audacity to tell me that the cost of my two training sessions exceeded the money deposit which means they value each training session at cost. As a small business, I cannot overstate how disappointed I am in the service and experience I had with Athena.

Pros
Offer more features than competitors. Athena is a larger EMR company with a large network of providers in many specialty areas.

Cons
Had an "expiring" deal to pressure us into signing up. Material facts of our arrangement changed and Athena would not refund our deposit so our company lost money for the two training sessions we received. Full EMR/Billing software suite VERY expensive (over 9%) compared to industry.

Continues to evolve. Had been using it for about 6 years now. We had signed a contract in 2011. In 2013, certainly be started getting charged for every single" closed loop" order, example each E prescription was charged 1 dollar. Each lab value was charged. If I ordered CBC, CMP, A1c, lipids for 1 patient, I was charged. This became quite expensive. This forces us to use paper prescriptions instead of the e-prescriptions. We paid per provider at the time of registration to enroll with sure scripts. We write about 40,000 prescriptions every year. As you could imagine, this becomes expensive fairly quickly.

Cloud based

Practices with inhouse billers BEWARE

Used occasionally for less than 6 months
Reviewed 2017-12-07
Review Source: Software Advice

This company sold us their “EHR only” version, knowing our intentions to use our own billing company and not theirs. They failed to disclose that this would cripple our front desk - we could not verify insurance, see an account balance, scan any ID cards, or utilize an appointment reminder system. You know, features you think would be there. We only learned these things after asking about them, mid-implementation process. If we asked how do you do this or that, the answer was always “well you can’t because you didn’t purchase the full package.” It became clear they were trying to force us into using their billing company, rather than ours. None of that was made clear beforehand, which is just unethical. Our implementation specialist, if you can call her that, was highly unaccomodating to our needs, did not return phone calls, and was only available on her terms. She made zero effort to work out any arrangement with our biller, and in the end we ditched Athena because of her lack of willingness to help us. We switched to Advanced MD and the difference is NIGHT AND DAY. Athena was on track to ruin our practice - It was like buying a car, and then finding out it didn’t have an engine. Also, Advanced MD can do everything Athena refused to do, PLUS they’re cheaper.

Pros
EHR software was attractive on demo, and appeared to be user-friendly. The cost was a little high, but seemed worth it at first.

Cons
This company was dishonest with our practice about what we purchased, and their business model is unethical.

Cons
The interface and many of the UI control concepts are dated on the user front end. The administrative interfaces are similarly dated and make a great deal of extra work for organizations that have many providers, locations, specialties, etc...

Overall, Athena is good enough to select as an EMR for urgent care after you put in hundreds of hours to get it set up how you would like it. If just starting out, Athena would not be my first choice. There are other better options that perform better and costs less. Once you start with Athena, it's hard to switch EMR's bc of the lockbox and the fact of losing all patient data.

Pros
- I like the ability to customize "most things" in Athena. It would be nice to have more flexibility to customize layouts like the classic version of Athena. - Once you create templates, the charting can be completed fairly quickly. - Epocrates is built into the Athena order screen.

Cons
- Only 1 person at a time may enter and/or complete orders. - Expensive % of collections cost. - Not geared towards Urgent Care. - Minimal reporting options for the clinical side.

Why we are leaving Athena....

Product/company has not lived up to the promises made to increase cash flow. It's difficult to have control over claims and numerous times we found service items that were written off by Athena rather than being researched for additional reimbursement. We feel Athena is not a good match for a small practice. Cost of numerous features that a small practice does not utilize makes the cost of Athena too expensive.

Pros
Insurance eligibility checking system. Data entry of claims easy to navigate. Basic scheduling was ok.

Cons
Having funds go to your specific bank, then having to transfer monies making cash flow delay for the practice by several days. Very time consuming to find correct insurance plans, need a way to identify insurance payor by EDI number. Customer service needs required long hold times and we feel this was a significantly poor use of our staff time.
