A trusted partner that helps us both our clinical and business model so we can successfully care for our pediatric patients and keep our doors open. I like the model that they don't make money unless we do so they just don't sell us software and forget about us and the needs of our practice. Having them constantly monitoring the healthcare environment, researching and developing products and tools means we stay on the cutting edge and can survive no matter what is sent our way by insurers, contracts, regulators and government.
Hard to answer this question because there is very little we don't like. Sure do we wish they would provide us with more developmental scored screens on the portal and help us to become even more paperless. It is not a doc in a box and the user needs to be engaged and collaborate with athenahealth to utilize and optimize the product. I don't see this as a negative. Athenahealth is growing at 30% per year and we need them to keep their pulse on the not losing the service model and support they have built their co-sourcing model on. Healthcare management has gotten more complicated and cumbersome and bridging the gap with what Athena has to offer and what practices need is a must.

Been on Athena approximately 18 months now. The transition was difficult as we are a very busy practice but it gets better daily. The financial side is a whole other situation - speaking as a coder/biller this program can be a nightmare.
Great chart - the medical record portion is outstanding. Being able to have everything in one place and minimal time wasted on medical records requests.
As I stated previously, the billing portion of the software is every biller's nightmare. The coding and reimbursement portion is not truly in our control as Athena can make changes on claims as they deem necessar. Also there are many claims the payer states are paid or have been paid and the money is not found anywhere. Too many unpostable issues, to many missing eobs, too many tiers of support - very unsatisfied with this part of the program. Having to correct posting of Athena posted payments makes double work. Also having to post payments or adjustments where things are adjusted off to global incorrectly is also double work

CSM care about the product, it's good when it works, but not liking it when I'm looking at my bank account and can't bill patients, patient accounts are wrong and my bank is light over 10k. Get your payer table spaces correct so that when you bill they are sent to the correct payer.
I really liked the machine learning part, sold one way but in reality, doesn't hit all the marks. We do like the patient care part, health history, and document management.
Billing, and medical bills. I'm writing this review because they are currently 2 months behind in updating billing and processing my checks. It's just not me that's having this issue, yes covid. However, that train has left. Athena took their invoice amount for last month but they haven't processed my checks to fill that void, don't do athena billing. Everything should be EFT straight to your bank, doing that now but have 9k sitting somewhere until they get people to process their payment.

Poor, we were promised that it was going to do machine learning so that it would learn our protocols and tendencies, I have seen none of this.
Ability to fax reports directly to providers
Minimal to no responsiveness from the company, basically plug and play, and skim percentage of your profits. Awkward interface.

I had Allscripts before this EMR for ten years. Horrible customer service. I had eMDS after Allscripts - more horrible service and a disaster of a product that was nearly non-functional. I believe that Athena is the best that there currently is. I would not change and it has helped my bottom line and satisfaction in practice. No EMR is going to save you time - all they do is keep you honest in reporting and decrease your risk of accidentally over billing due to lack of documentation.
It handles the changes to the healthcare environment; ie MACRA, MIPS, Meaningfull use, automatic vaccine/ pharmaceutical data download. Electronic prescribing including controlled substances.
Time consuming like most EMRs. There really isn't a significant negative for this product. Requires that you take the time to customize and streamline for your workflow.

RUN AWAY!!! RUN AWAY!!!
I like that it tells you what quality measures need to be met... I like that you can take a chart photo and upload it from your smartphone....That's about it.
Being able to fax back and forth with our nursing homes is a joke. It takes almost 10 steps for every fax. When we do in house labs, we enter the lab, complete the lab, save the lab, close the lab...then an hour later it is back in a "bucket" to be closed. When I have complained about all these steps I have been told its basically a checks and balances system. Everything that we need to do in our office seems to have three to four extra steps from our old vendor. They promised to do all of our billing...well that's a joke. The bill for obvious things and then write off everything else. We are losing money on a daily basis due to this. There truly isn't a thing about this software that I like. I have stated that the next time that I am out looking for a job, that I will ask them who their vendor is, and if they say "Athena", I'm walking out. I never want to have anything to do with this company again.

I have used Athena and 2 other major EMR Brand recently. Athena is by far the better option. Documentation made easy, efficient and easily accessible. With the new streamline, the trends of vitals and labs are now better than previous. Good tool for communication between staff and patients. Communication between offices (referrals) is becoming easier and more clear. I would highly recommend Athena over the other major Brands I have utilized for efficiency, ease of use.
trends are great, communication is a great tool which is placed directly into their chart notes. Quality tab makes keeping up to date on preventative services easy.
Many Many Many duplicates of labs, consult reports, ER reports etc through the interface. Takes time signing off documents which many times are duplicates. at times difficult to determine where a document has been filed.

The foundation is good, the support could be better.
Flows overall efficiently, well integrated system; scheduling, clinic notes, billing, patient portal.
The things that don't work or need tweaking, do not get resolved quickly. The Past medical history section, flow sheets, quality management sections take a long time to load, the pages glitch and stall - really affect efficiency. Generating reliable data in the quality metrics is difficult and similar reports yield different data which questions the validity of the reporting. Some canned reports I've found included the mid-level providers but didn't provide data on the physicians. Solving these problems is difficult and time consuming; a ticket can take weeks to be assigned, then reassigned after further questions.

Athena's system over-all has helped us with compliance and tracking of accounts receivable. The rules system and scrubbing process for claims are a work in progress but as you create more billing rules, there are fewer denials on the back end. I find the system to be a little slow, but overall is quite functional to our needs. Our staff has found the system to be easy to use. We have found the more time you spend creating templates the quicker the patient flow is. There are some billing issues that were not talked about on the front end such as web access for some payers which delayed payment on claims and resolving that was and continues to be quite time-to consume. Overall the system works as advertised and has been helpful to our office flow, claims, and A/R.
Easy to follow claims and a/r with work flows on every claim. Easy office pt work flow
The system itself runs slowly regardless of the computer its run on. The system is a little convoluted and can be hard to navigate. Some system billing errors, specifically w/ dme that had to be resolved. Does not handle referral needs well, must create custom rules. Given how important this is, it should be integrated into the system but isn't.

The thought of changing EHR systems is daunting. Our change to Athena however, was wonderful. We adore the system. The transmission of the info from our first EHR to this one was complete and accurate. We were able to make decisions about how we wanted it to conform to our needs. The trainers are wonderful and have been back several time for sessions to broaden our use and experience. We were pokey at first, but the system is intuitive and simple to figure out for the experienced staff and for the new staff. I've determined that Athena built in several paths to each task - so it appeals to logic across a broad range of staff.
I get comfortable in my little zone and have a tendency to stay there - THEN Athena shows up for a refresher course and next thing I know, I have a whole new bag of tricks! A little faster, a lot better.

They have a wide array of reports, especially billing and RCM reports. Chronic Care Mgt is developed and usable. They offer a number of training videos and if the staff is given the time to watch them, then in time one can become conversant in using the software. But there is an initially high learning curve even with having experience with other EHR/PMS.
The EHR/PMS is a unified system that is very all-encompassing and is capable of serving the needs of a broad number of specialties as well as primary care.
The EHR attempts to do too much and has become too complex in its workings. As a result, when you need assistance on most anything, you will have to create a case for further assistance. I particularly found this very frustrating in trying to resolve A/R issues such as unpostables or unallocated ERAs; especially in light of the fact that Athena earns a percentage of all practi ce revenue and is supposed to be a partner in the initial processing and reviewing of claims, denials and rejections. I found very litte to actually point to what was being done on the front end by their billing personnel.

I do not recommend Athena for anyone.
Ability to pull assessment and plans from previous notes into the present note which decreases documentation time.
1. I was told that Athena does billing and therefore, makes sure claims are clean when they go out. This is not the case. Athena does not do any billing but merely serves as a clearing house for claims and does posting. Athena will also sometimes change items on claims incorrectly, such as place of service, and this will cause claims to be rejected. 2. Also, I was told that I was ready to go live with Athena, only to find out that various insurance information, NPI numbers for providers, etc., had not been entered correctly and caused claims to be held up. 3. I was also told that Athena has pediatric templates (what are called encounter plans) that are consistent with Bright Futures, the guidelines per the American Academy of Pediatrics. These did not exist. The pediatrician has to develop the encounter plans without any template whatsoever. 4. My time seeing patients is longer, I have had to hire a biller and scribe to assist with the additional work and Athena did not compensate me for the lost revenue I incurred because Athena held up claims with their errors for several months before my biller caught the mistake.

Working with Athena has been great. They are very responsive when we have questions or issues and work with us to make the software meet our needs, without making us fit into the usual boxes as we are a very unique practice.

Some processing require several steps, which sometimes seem unnecessary but are not too time consuming

I've been using Athena for the past 2.5 years. It has gone through some major changes during that time, all of which I believe are improvements in its functionality and ease of use. As a physician I find it incredibly easy to navigate through my notes and the patients chart while I am in the note. I can add orders while I am on the same page as my HPI or Exam. I can pull up labs and view them in a flowsheet format without losing my place in the note/encounter. Overall it is a great system.
Great customer support, great ease of use, functions very smoothly
Lots of smaller (and sometimes big) things that Athena can improve on that seemingly drags its feet with. They offer a "ideas" or suggestions page where we as users can vote on ideas which is great, but it seems like many of these ideas are ignored or not prioritized.

-5.3% collection rate for my specialty for full billing service, many EOBs such as Cigna n texanplus are not posted yet they charge you 5.3% of the collections. I've provided our logins for various insurance websites, yet they don't do anything. -denied claims: some they tell you are denied, some are put on hold that unless you check you don't even know is denied. They do not do much for denied claims despite their advertisement. -they charge $1 for every e prescription you write -calling support line easily hold for 20-25 min then many times their twos do not know the answer and give you a reference number n call back later -my account manager and her boss ignore my emails and phone calls w concerns not just not know answer, flat out ignore.
Emr and billing in onr
Way too expensive for the level of service, lack of many EOB posting n denied claims work up make 5.3% not worthwhile

Athena is customizable and assists our practice in every aspect. Having our billing and our EHR in one system that has a great support system really makes everyone's job easier.
Athena has really made my job as billing coordinator so easy. I am able to help my physicians improve their dictation which allows me to more accurately bill for the procedures they perform. Plus Athena follows up on my claims!
Sometimes Athena has holds or denial reason that may not be the most accurate. I have to reach out to Athena to assist in resolving the issues. (which is very easy to do) We also have to customize our templates to fit our specialty and services we provide. Once we get the templates fixed, it makes dictating so much easier.
